Day 1: Izmir & Ephesus Delight

Touching down in Izmir, we kicked off the day with a Turkish breakfast and cashed out some lira from a local exchange teller. We had a leisurely stroll through the city to enjoy the nice weather as a change from the cloudy week in London.

In the afternoon, we hit the road to Ephesus, marveling at ancient ruins. We traversed the historic site, relishing the rich history as our legs felt week after the long walk under the sun. Soon after we had a late lunch in Selcuk, treating our taste buds to delectable Turkish cuisine.

Day 2: Göreme Underground and Love Valley Drive

Waking up in our cave hotel in Göreme, we indulged in a complimentary turkish breakfast, embracing the unique geography of the area.

Later in the morning, we explored the impressive Uchisar Castle, delving into the intriguing caves that once served as homes. Soon after, we drove to the underground city of Derinkuyu proved to be another unexpected gem, with a local guide unveiling the secrets of its 7 or 8 floors (that we had access to). I was amazed by how a whole village could live underground, with a school, church and even space for livestock.

As evening approached, we drive to Love Valley, maneuvering the car through the captivating landscapes added an extra layer of excitement. Arriving in Love Valley, the striking rock formations created a surreal setting for a memorable evening.

We spent the night having a turkish dinner in Göreme at the Gurme Kebab. There was a turkish ice cream cart outside the restaurant, and the ice cream was worth every lira. Turkish ice cream has a distinct consistency, the goat milk in it makes it slow melting and made it a more enjoyable experience.

Day 3: Göreme and Avanos

In a spontaneous move, we decided to extend our stay in Göreme for an extra day to soak in more of the local culture and explore the surrounding wonders. The day kicked off at a leisurely pace to the Güray Museum, a time capsule of antique and modern Turkish ceramics, pottery, and artifacts. We were mesmerized by the centuries-old pieces and some newer glow-in-the-dark ceramics. A few of us couldn't hold back from buying a handmade painting, that was made in front of us, as a keepsake from our memorable trip.

Later, we went on a wild adventure in an old Jeep with our fearless driver who navigated the area's twists and turns with ease. Speeding around blind corners and hills with no roads in sight, the exhilarating ride added a dash of adrenaline to our day.

The friendly hotel staff arranged for ATV rides after our hot air balloon plans fell through, ensuring we still had an exciting adventure. We were all very excited for the ATVs as it was our frist time driving them, but we definately did not dress appropriately for them. As the sun began to descent, we hopped on the ATV's and our initial competitiveness led to a few friendly collisions. Once we got told off by the instructors, we found a pace that suited us all and the experience became a highlight of the trip.

After the thrilling escapade, we opted for a relaxing evening as we prepared to fly to Istanbul. Despite a slight flight delay, a recurring theme in this trip.
